Y'all . . . the sun is finally out today. I swear it feels like three weeks since we've seen sunlight. It's rained so much lately. My allergies are freaking ridiculous. It was literally 91 degrees yesterday. It's currently 51 with a low of 36. What is that really all about Louisiana? But hey, I'm so happy it will be a clear evening for wine drinking and handing out candy to trick or treaters.
With the sun shining through my kitchen window, I'm feeling inspired to write. I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about inspiration and motivation. I am super into podcasts these days. I'm super new in the podcast game. I have never had the slightest interest in listening before, but a friend of mine mentioned in passing that she had recently began a podcast. Alissa is a very successful realtor in the Greater Baton Rouge area. For her podcast, she partners with another area realtor and they compliment each other nicely. While the podcast is focused on the real estate industry, they do discuss many topics that have spoken to me in my field of business.
I flew through their show in just two days. It was so motivating and intriguing to hear them talk so excitedly about their different business and lives. I was left thirsty for more. So I began browsing other shows and chatting with other stylists in my Sola for some different titles to give a listen to.
It is so refreshing to hear other people offer up words of encouragement to total strangers. I have enjoyed hearing the different journeys that different people have made. I've heard the stories of some very prominent figures in the hairdressing world and also the stories of artists that I never knew existed. Technology is so crazy these days. As we are about to enter into a new decade, I know that ever-developing can be frustrating and even detrimental to society at times. But this is one of those times that I marvel at it. Now as I cruise down the streets of BR, I am listening and gaining so much insight that I can apply to my business and my personal life. It really is amazing to think that not too terribly long ago, we would have had to wait for a magazine to get published to get ideas for our hairstyles. Not anymore. I can post a picture of a new set of eyelash extensions and have five new clients go online and book their own appointments. I don't even have to lift a finger.
So as I sign off this evening to enjoy a nice homecooked pre-trick or treat dinner, I want to leave you with a few of my favorite podcasts. Give them a listen and please share your favorites with me :)
1) Hustle Humbly Podcast - This is a podcast from realtors Alissa and Katy. They share some insight into the things they do to achieve success. It is focused on the real estate industry, however, they share so many tips, tricks and all-around good habits that any business owner could very easily implement.
2) Hairbrained Conversations - Hosted by Gordon Miller, CEO of Hairbrained.me, this weekly podcast interviews some of the most influential personalities in the hair biz. It is so inspiring to hear the various artists detail their past and how they became leaders in the industry.
3) Raising the Bar - This show is brought to you by Drybar owners Alli Webb and Michael Landau. It is a show for entrepreneurs or anyone wanting to know more about founding a business. They interview business owners from such a variety of industries. You will hear the stories of very established businesses and even many stories from up and coming businesses.
Here goes my very first blog post ever . . . Welcome! My name is Erica. I am a cosmetologist located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I work out of my own small suite located in the heart of the city. I cannot even begin to express how much I love what I do and how much I love all the people my career puts me around. I am the happiest I have ever been in my life. I am so excited about this blog and to be able to share tips, ideas and whatever pops into my head with you guys. I have also enjoyed writing all my life and it feels good to dive back into that.
I'll give you just a little background on me. And I'll make it quick. On the personal side of things, I live my life with my long-time boyfriend, Logan, and our lab puppy, Pierre. We love sports, big IPA's and hard rock. When we aren't working, we're probably hanging out by our swimming pool, chipping at our floating putting green, drinking some Holy Roller and listening to GNR.
Professionally, I am a licensed cosmetologist in Louisiana. I attended the Aveda Institute in Baton Rouge and graduated in 2010. Before beauty school, I always worked in the field of business. Actually, growing up, I always wanted to be an auditor or a corporate attorney. I never thought about becoming a hairstylist. I never thought I had a creative bone in my body. But, being the business manager of a small law practice taught me one big thing. I learned that I was not meant to be chained to a desk. I needed interaction with others. I needed movement. I needed music. I craved to be in a field that thrived on constant education, variety and gratification in return. I cannot be more pleased with my decision to make that career change.
So here I am now. A self-employed stylist. I spend my days taking care of my amazing clients and sneaking over to the pilates studio next door. I will be sharing bits and pieces of my life here on this blog.
